NHL 2K11 HD is the ultimate hockey game for the iPad. Even those who are not hockey or sports fans may find this to be an excellent game worth having.
Playing NHL 2K11 HD can be done with a traditional virtual joystick and buttons or with an innovative one-handed method. Most players will probably feel more comfortable with the former setup, though casual gamers or those who just like to sample different options may enjoy trying the one-handed control.
To get started choose a team by swiping through the available jerseys in the main menu. Or if you are in it for the long haul then choose the season option. If this is your first go-round, there is an excellent tutorial that walks through the basics of playing.
If playing with the virtual buttons, you will find they are arranged close enough together so it is easy to tap between them during the sometimes frantic gameplay. The buttons, which have icons detailing their function, are used for passing, shooting and switching players while on offense. Defense includes a button for trying to steal the puck or check (hit) an opponent. Switching players is one of the few functions that actually performs better under the one-handed approach, as you simply tap on the player that you want to control. Hockey games lend themselves to a lot of button-tapping, so the quicker you memorize the button locations the less frustration you will have when trying to steal the puck or score a goal.
On the iPad, NHL 2K11 HD is less comprehensive than the console version, although this is to be expected given that this is a touch-screen mobile device. Holding the iPad with two hands to use the virtual controls can also get tiring after a full game or two. Yet NHL 2K11 is a one of the better sports games available right now for the iPad. It plays well and is extremely stable – a must have for sports fans or those who want a solid, addicting game.

Microsoft has the XBox 360. Sony sells the PlayStation 3. Nintendo offers the family-friendly Wii. Apple, by contrast, doesn’t sell a gaming console.
Or does it? Load medieval fighting gameInfinity Blade onto the iPad 2, hook it up to a high-definition television using Apple’s $39 digital AV adapter and it can be hard to tell.
Apple claims the new version of its tablet computer offers 9x the graphics performance of the old model. quite a claim, but game developers report the new tablet’s graphics capabilities are impressive. “Apple surprised us,” says Rob Murray, Chief Executive of game developer Firemint.
Want a demo? The updated version of Chair Entertainment’s Infinity Blade medieval fighting game has been built to soak up some of the extra graphics power offered by the Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR SGX 543MP2 GPU built into the iPad 2’s A5 processor.
Infinity Blade runs just fine on an iPad. Put it on the iPad 2, however, and gamers will notice a big leap in graphics. There’s more coming, promises Donald Mustard, creative director at Chair. “We’ll be able to do things that are just mind blowing.”
Graphics, however, are just a start. The new machine’s advanced built-in gyro turns the tablet into a tossable, turnable gaming controller — kind of like the Nintendo Wii’s Wiimote.
That lets players send virtual cars carooming across a virtual racetrack in new games such as Firemint’s Real Racing 2 HD, which turns the iPad into one big steering wheel.
Gamers can compete in battles with players on iPads and iPhones anywhere on the net — a little like Microsoft’s XBox Live.
And HDMI video mirroring lets users put the action on the screen onto a high-definition television set — just like cutting edge consoles do.
To be sure, the iPad lacks a gaming console’s graphics power, but that’s coming. “We’re about two years away from surpassing consoles,” Mustard says.
iPad 2 Shows Why Apple Doesn’t Need A Gaming Console

Wizard Hex is an abstract game of territory control where 1 to 6 wizards representing 6 elemental forces (earth, wind, fire, water, ice and lightning) vie for dominance on an hexagonal network of 19 interconnected dots. Each player enters the board from one of the 6 sides assigned to his element. When the 19th slot is occupied, the game ends and the player with the most tokens in play wins. But there is a catch (two in fact) : a player can only attack an enemy element (an element which is on the opposite side of the board) and he can use the playing pieces of his 2 allied elements (these are two either side of him).
Gameplay
After a first turn where all player are allowed only one move, play continues with each player being able to take 2 moves per turn. The possible moves are : expansion, fortification and attack. For each move, the player is guided by the interface, all possible moves being indicated by a pulsating glow on the slots where a play is authorized. Expansion consist in placing a playing piece of one’s own or allied element in a free adjacent slot of that element. Fortification is done by placing an additionnal playing piece on an already present token, strengthening it. A freshly played token has a bronze hue and becomes silver when fortified once, then golden when fortified further. The last type of move is the attack. When attacking, you simply drag one of your playing piece (or one of your allied elements) on an adjacent space occupied by an enemy element. The outcome of the attack depends on the respective colors (bronze, silver or gold) of the attacker and the defender. The defending token reduces the level of the attacker by its own level. Ergo, same level playing pieces destroy each other, a silver token attacking a bronze one destroys it but is reduced to bronze level, so on and so forth. The fact that tokens are destroyed is critical since each element has a limited pool of 20 tokens. When an element’s pool is empty, that player is not eliminated from the game as he can still play his allied elements and can still win if he uses them to ensure that his element will have the majority when the board is full.
Implementation
Wizard Hex is gorgeous to behold, and conveys perfectly the atmosphere of a medieval game played by elemental wizards. The graphics are crisp and the iPhone version takes advantage of the retina display. The board is surrounded by a flickering candle flame that casts moving shadows on the board. This attention to detail makes for a very enjoyable experience. The interface is very well thought out and elegant, the glow showing the possible moves and the metalic “cling” when a piece is played makes the game easy to play and immersive. All player/AI configurations are possible, up to a total of 6 participants but the AI level is not very strong, even at full strength so it should only be used in learning games. The game really shines with more than 3 players. Playing with your allied elements (belonging to opposing players) creates a dynamic that make the game quite chaotic and may not be suited to the taste of players used to more classic and controllable abstract games.

You can’t think of Pac-Man without Ms. Pac-Man, and now, the Pac-Man with the bow is now on the iPad. You can relive your arcade glory days in practically full size. The interface even gives you the bottom bar, reminiscent of the physical arcade version.
Now there isn’t anything new to Ms. Pac-Man with the iPad version. In fact, there is actually less than the iPhone version. There is even less than the iPad version of regular old Pac-Man. Ms. Pac-Man also doesn’t allow for rotation, so you can only play in portrait mode. Pac-Man does allow for landscape gameplay, but sadly, not Ms. Pac-Man.
Game Center online leader boards and achievements were missing until a new update that was released last week. The digital age of the Pac-Man series was made for comparing scores online. Internet connectivity is an essential addition to the arcade classic, and it’s great that Namco finally added it in. It is, however, unfortunate that you can’t view the leader boards or achievements in game.
The graphics of Ms. Pac-Man aren’t as finely polished and redone as in Pac-Man for iPad. Pac-Man offers very smooth visuals that have been updated from the 8-bit version arcade days. Ms. Pac-Man, however, still seems to look just like the old arcade version.
The speed is a major downfall as well. There are three different game modes that should adjust the speed. They all feel slow, which makes the game less enjoyable. The original mode in Pac-Man offers a great speed boost over the other two modes, but it’s not included in the Ms. Pac-Man version. All versions of Pac-Man could use an extra mode similar to the optional speed chip in the arcade models.
Ms. Pac-Man just doesn’t feel complete. It’s not like Namco is incapable of making these features. They’re all included in Pac-Man for the iPad, but for some unknown reason, they were not transported to Ms. Pac-Man. The same engine and feature set of Pac-Man, with a Ms. Pac-Man theme would have been great.
The iPad version is not all bad, though. The swipe controls are outstanding on the 9.7” screen, especially compared to the iPhone. It really is a breeze to control, and perfectly made for the touch screen. The controls make it that much easier to maneuver through the changing level layouts.
There are still a couple of instances where the controls can lead to your demise. There are a couple great things from the iPhone version that did make the transition. You can continue a game after losing all your lives. You can also start a new game, and pick up at any level you’ve reached. That way you can choose to start from level 10 instead of the beginning.
Ms. Pac-Man for iPad ($4.99) is a great arcade game even though it is missing a couple of features. For now, it’s worth considering, depending on how big a fan you are. Namco needs to align Ms. Pac-Man for iPad closer to Pac-Man for iPad. Until then, the $5 price tag just won’t seem worth it for everyone. The Game Center update is nice, and hopefully is the first in a series of future updates.

The Secret of Monkey Island from LucasArts is nearly as good as it’s sequel. Monkey Island 2 was such a great game that it can be easy to forget just how good a game Monkey Island 1 is! There are things that Monkey Island 1 has that Monkey Island 2 doesn’t have.: You actually get to go to Monkey Island in this game, no so in the sequel! Playing Monkey Island 1 also lets you in on a lot of in jokes that you wouldn’t get in Monkey Island 2, like the telescope joke. Monkey Island 1 has some great in jokes for adventure gamers, like a parody of the totally random death traps that were so common in Sierra On-Line Adventure games in the late 1980s and early 1990s. If you like games like Broken Sword you’ll love the Monkey Island games! The humor in the Monkey Island games is zanny, like a Douglas Adams novel, except these games have a plot.
In Monkey Island 1 the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood has come to the island of Melee to become a pirate, even though he’s told he “looks more like a flooring inspector.” He learns he has to pass three tests: specifically to become a master swordsman, master treasure hunter, and a master thief in order to be a pirate. It also begins the on again off again romance that Guybrush has with Governor Marley, who is kidnapped by the ghost pirate LeChuck once Guybrush passes the three tests, and Guybrush must purchase a boat and find a crew to go to Monkey Island with him and rescue Governor Marley. (As it turns out, the Governor really doesn’t need Guybrush’s help… the Monkey Island games are known for their strong female characters.)
The puzzles in Monkey Island 1 are a little easier but also a little more intuitive than the puzzles in Monkey Island 2. But there are times, like when you’re cooking a recipe aboard the ship on you’re way to Monkey Island or the red herring puzzle, that you’ll have to think abstractly like you would in Monkey Island 2. Monkey Island 1 is definitely a challenging game!
Some of the most memorable parts of the game include when you’re training to beat the sword master (who happens to be a woman) by learning how to respond to her insults, the canabals on Monkey Island who are worried about their cholosterol, and the ghost pirate shipin the hellish fire beneath Monkey Island, with LeChuck, his ghost crew, and even ghost pigs that you can see inside of when they eat! Also memorable are the minor characters, like Stan the used ship salesman who wears a cowboy hat like Cal Worthington’s.
The graphics in the Special edition are improved over the classic edition, although they aren’t as good as the graphics of Monkey Island 2′s special edition. The controls are less iDevice oriented than Monkey Island 2, but the hint system is not nearly as sensitive and doesn’t give you hints when you don’t want them like Monkey Island 2 does. These are minor issues… on the whole if you like adventure games you definately should try the first two Monkey Island games!

Most of the ipad games are mini game for killing time. Such as the famous apps angry bird, fruit ninja and i-fart. However, there is a quite good MMO game for ipad. The game run very smooth on ipad and we play with real human while joining the same server. Some people even say that is a kind of ipad version of word of warcraft. Well, I think this cannot compare with WOW. Yet it is still nice.
